CHANGING SPACES Vienna–Barcelona 2026
Im_flieger Vienna in cooperation with nunart Barcelona
Residency: 2.–30.9.2026
More about nunart here.

On 20 November 2026 Veza Fernandez will share the results of her residency at Im_flieger in Vienna.

During her four-week residency at nunart in Barcelona, Veza Fernandez is exploring her acoustic horns. Imaginary instruments that she is developing in dialogue with Leonora Carrington, her speech therapist, and the characters that resonate within her from the eardrum of the unintelligible. Acoustic horns or ear trumpets are strange tubes and conduits that grow from the deepest anatomies of communication. She seeks to capture, process and amplify that which we struggle to hear, teaching us to sustain the fragility of verbal connection. Veza proposes a morphological dance that articulates itself to give way to a voice that sings from its most remote limits, learning to narrate from beyond the voices that we dare to learn to listen to.

From September 17 to 19, 2026, Veza Fernandez will lead a lab at nunart in Barcelona titled “Cuando la escucha duele la herida canta”:
Inspired by Leonora Carrington’s “The Hearing Trumpet”, the laboratory proposes collectively crafting these poetic devices in order to rehearse other ways of perceiving, thinking and relating to one another. It is not only about representing imaginary anatomies, but about inhabiting them, allowing them to communicate with us until they transform the way we move, sound, and where and how we place our attention.

Veza Fernandez (ES/AT) is a Vienna-based dance, voice, and performance artist. Her work explores the voice as a place of relation, imagination, and transformation, weaving singing, writing, dance, and speech into intense, polyphonic performances. Her pieces are sensitive and intense, casting polyphonically a convocation of voices and presences that yearn to move and to be moved. Her background stretches between Philology, Pedagogy, Theater, Music and Contemporary Dance. Fields that in one way or the other influence her artistic research and modus operandi within art making and art presenting. Fernandez’ work is strongly rooted locally, infiltrating from within the underground scene bigger dance and theater institutions. She holds a Masters in Choreography from DAS Graduate school (Amsterdam Academy for Theatre and Dance). Her work has been shown amongst other in brut Wien, Tanzquartier Vienna, Sophiensaele Berlin, Gesnerallee Zürich, de Singel Antwerp, La Casa Encendida Madrid. www.vezafernandez.com
