HOOD for Artist Parents was founded by core researchers and artist parents Andrea Gunnlaugsdóttir and Asher Ó Gormáin in 2021. The artistic practice HOOD Dreaming was developed as part of SCHULE@Im_flieger 2023 and has since been supported by Im_flieger as public field research.
HOOD for Artist Parents goes kex–kunsthalle exnergasse! In the exhibition On Chewing Shoelaces: Art, Mess and Radical Kinship, the initiative continues its exploration of the dual responsibility of being both an artist and a caregiver:
In a world that calls parents monstrous for wanting both autonomy and kin, the exhibition project is a space – a rupture – where the patriarchal and ableist demands of “professionalism” and “productivity” are side-eyed. On Chewing Shoelaces brings together painting, sculpture, film, performance, collective experimentation, a Queer Nursing book reading, and a FLINTA* play-fight night. The artistic practice HOOD Dreaming was developed as part of SCHULE@Im_flieger 2023 and has since been supported by Im_flieger as public field research.
A co-working area is integrated into the exhibition setting, inviting all visitors to: sit, read, work, cry, fight, collaborate, care, radicalise kinship, chew on shoelaces – and perhaps, together, make this mess matter.
Andrea Gunnlaugsdóttir (IS/AT) born in Reykjavík, Iceland, is a dancer and choreographer living in Vienna. In both independent and collaborative constellations her works move along the intersection of dance and performance, sometimes seeking formats beyond the stage. Her latest work CUMULUS in collaboration with artist Claudia Lomoschitz recently toured in Austria and Iceland and will soon be traveling to Norway. Andrea has collaborated with many Vienna based artists such as Doris Uhlich, Alix Eynaudi, Andrea Maurer, Veza Fernandes a.o. Next she will be stepping on stage in brut Wien in the work of choreographer Sara Lanner. Andrea has juggled co-parenting of two kids alongside her artistic career from the start, gaining some experience in feeling a lot of FOMO.
Asher Ó Gormáin (IE/UK/AT) is an Irish artist working across choreographic and visual art practices as a performance maker, dramaturge and lecturer. Her work engages closely with objects and materials, drawing out their performative agency to reveal the tactile, sensuous and existential dimensions of the “ordinary”, challenging anthropocentric perspectives. She holds a BA (Hons) degree in choreography from the Dartington College of Arts (2005), a diploma in dance from SEAD – Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (2008) and an MA degree with honours in visual art (TransArts) from the Vienna University of Applied Art (2021). She has taught at the Angewandte Performance Lab (APL) in Vienna on a regular basis since 2021. In 2020, she established HOOD for Artist Parents.
